Sure, Death In Paradise gets a decent calibre of guest star but it's tempting to think that's less to do with the quality of the script than the show's setting. Eldorado with an astronomical crime rate. But surely that doesn't mean we'll watch any old rubbish as long as the sun's shining? It's Wild At Heart with airs and graces. It's no coincidence that both series of Death In Paradise have aired during winter, when sniffling viewers are dreaming of warmer climes. The production is big on lush tropical forest, whirring ceiling fans, beige linen slacks and holiday brochure beaches. There's doubtless an element of meteorological escapism at play. It's like an 80s Lilt or Bacardi ad, or that Barclaycard campaign in which Rowan Atkinson prototyped his "hilarious" Johnny English character. It takes a bumbling Brit brainbox to come in, cut through the superstition and crack their crimes. The locals invariably believe in myths, magic and ghosts. It makes Midsomer Murders look like 24.ĭeath In Paradise is also distinctly patronising. See also the copious recaps and clunky exposition that litter the script, just in case anyone nodded off and missed a bit. This is undemanding drama for the hard-of-thinking or only-half-watching. Then Poole has a lightbulb moment, gathers all the suspects in one room and gives a Poirot-esque speech explaining everything. DI Poole investigates and narrows it down to a handful of potential killers. So far, so standard "fish-out-of-water with hilarious consequences" fare.Įpisodes are so formulaic, it's almost funny. Set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie but filmed on the gorgeous real one of Guadeloupe, this featherlight BBC1 comedy-crime-drama follows uptight Met officer Richard Poole (Ben Miller), who flew in to investigate the death of a colleague but ended up staying on as police chief.
